Jonathan O. Benton, 37, of Cleveland was killed late Sunday night in a head-on crash in Blount County, Alabama. The crash happened around 11:25 p.m. on Alabama 79 near the 21-mile marker, about four miles south of Adville.

Benton was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla when his car collided head-on with a 2020 Ford F-250. The pickup was driven by 52-year-old Troy W. Venable of Hayden.

Benton was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened well into the night, when a normal drive turned into a fatal collision in a matter of seconds.

The circumstances that led to the crash remain under investigation. At this point, the known details show where the collision happened, the vehicles involved and the people behind the wheel, but they do not explain what caused the two vehicles to collide.

For Benton’s family and friends, the details of the crash are only part of what they are now facing. They lost someone they knew as a person, not simply as the driver of a car involved in a deadly wreck.

Benton was from Cleveland, and his death leaves people who knew him dealing with an absence that came without warning. The shock of losing someone suddenly can settle into everyday moments, from an empty seat to a phone that will no longer ring with his name.

The crash also serves as another painful reminder of how quickly a trip on a familiar road can change. One moment, Benton was behind the wheel of his Toyota. By the end of the night, his family was left with news no family wants to receive.

Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Until that work is complete, important questions about what happened on Alabama 79 remain unanswered.

For those closest to Jonathan O. Benton, the focus now is on the life he lived and the memories he leaves behind. His death ended a life at 37, but the people who knew him will carry those memories long after the wreck itself is cleared from the road.
