Six-year-old Winter was a little girl who could not speak to ask for help. On a hot summer afternoon, she boarded a daycare bus after finishing her school day at Macon-Hall Elementary. She was supposed to be taken to a child care center in Cordova. Instead, she never made it inside the building.
Her father, Bryan Jones, said his daughter was loaded onto the daycare bus right after school let out. But when the bus arrived at its destination, nobody checked the back rows. Winter sat alone inside the closed bus while the sun beat down on the vehicle for hours.
Temperatures across Memphis climbed to nearly 99 degrees that afternoon. Inside a parked vehicle with the windows rolled up, the heat quickly reaches dangerous levels. With no way to call out or open the doors, the child had no way to get out.
Around 3:23 p.m., emergency responders got a call about a child needing medical help. Officers arrived at a property on Walnut Knoll in Cordova, where they found the young girl completely unresponsive. Paramedics rushed her to a local hospital in critical condition as doctors worked to save her.
Medical staff pronounced Winter dead shortly after she arrived at the hospital. Her family got the news only hours after sending her off to school that morning. Her father is now left trying to understand how a normal school day ended in a tragedy.
Memphis Police opened an investigation to figure out who was responsible for leaving the girl on the bus. Investigators are checking transportation logs, headcount rules, and how long the child was left inside. Officers interviewed daycare workers as part of the case.
For Winter’s family, the loss leaves an empty space that cannot be filled. She was a child who relied on adults to look out for her safety. Now her father and relatives are grieving a little girl whose life was cut far too short.
