A routine evening trip along Highway 69 turned fatal Wednesday night after a motorcycle and an SUV slammed into each other just south of town. The crash happened around 8:15 p.m. near the 137-mile marker, roughly four miles outside the Tuscaloosa city line.
Willie P. Bryant, 60, of Sawyerville, was riding his 2004 Honda VTX1300C motorcycle along the highway when he collided with a 2024 Chevrolet Blazer driven by a Tuscaloosa woman. The force of the collision threw Bryant off his motorcycle onto the pavement.
Alabama State Troopers arrived shortly after to secure the crash zone and direct incoming emergency vehicles. Medics evaluated Bryant at the scene, but he suffered fatal injuries upon impact and was pronounced dead at the location.
The driver of the Chevrolet Blazer sustained injuries during the collision as well. Emergency responders loaded her into an ambulance and transported her directly to DCH Regional Medical Center for further care.
A 14-year-old teenager riding as a passenger in the Blazer was also injured in the wreck. Paramedics took the youth to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Trooper Jaylon James, speaking for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, confirmed that state troopers are heading the official investigation. Crash reconstruction officers spent hours at the mile marker mapping out tire marks, vehicle positioning, and roadway conditions.
Traffic along Alabama 69 faced heavy delays while emergency crews worked to clear debris and tow both damaged vehicles from the road. Authorities continue to review the sequence of events to determine what caused the two vehicles to collide on the open stretch.
