It was just past eight on a warm Wednesday evening when Willie P. Bryant took his motorcycle out onto Alabama 69. Bryant, 60, lived down in Sawyerville, a small Hale County community where folks know their neighbors by name. He was riding north toward Tuscaloosa on his 2004 Honda VTX1300C cruiser. Nothing about the night suggested it would be his last ride.

About four miles south of the Tuscaloosa city limits, near mile marker 137, traffic was moving along the two-lane stretch as usual. At roughly 8:15 p.m., Bryant’s motorcycle collided with a 2024 Chevrolet Blazer. The impact was violent and sudden, throwing Bryant from his bike onto the roadway.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene after calls flooded in about a heavy wreck on the highway. Paramedics checked Bryant right away, but there was nothing they could do. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the asphalt before he could be moved to a hospital.

Word of the crash traveled fast back down to Sawyerville. Friends and neighbors reacted with shock as news spread that Bryant was gone. In a rural town where people rely on each other daily, losing a familiar face in an instant hits hard.

The crash left more than one family hurting that night. The driver of the Chevrolet Blazer, a woman from Tuscaloosa, suffered injuries in the collision. First responders stabilized her at the scene and transported her to DCH Regional Medical Center for treatment.

A 14-year-old passenger inside the SUV was also hurt during the wreck. Medics transported the teenager to a local hospital for medical care. State troopers have not released updated medical conditions for either occupant of the Blazer.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Highway Patrol Division closed down parts of Alabama 69 to clear the wreckage and gather evidence. Trooper Jaylon James confirmed the time and location of the crash. Investigators are working to figure out exactly what led up to the collision as the local community mourns a life cut short.
