Early Tuesday morning turned fatal along a quiet rural stretch of track in central Minnesota. Keith Michael Donovan, a 37-year-old resident of nearby Brainerd, lost his life when his car collided with a freight train. The tragic accident took place right around 6:27 a.m. along West Gull River Road Southwest, just south of Highway 210 in Sylvan Township.
Donovan was driving northbound behind the wheel of a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze. He approached the tracks near a local landmark, the Corner Store gas station, trying to navigate the rural crossing. For reasons local authorities are still trying to figure out, the small sedan failed to clear the tracks before the locomotive reached the intersection.

The impact was immediate and devastating. Local emergency teams rushed to the scene shortly after receiving the call, finding the massive train brought to a complete stop. Donovan’s wrecked Chevy Cruze came to rest on the south side of the tracks, showing severe damage from the heavy collision.
Responders from the Pillager Area Fire and Rescue, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, and North Ambulance all arrived to assist. First responders worked quickly at the crash site, but there was nothing they could do to save the young driver. State troopers confirmed that Donovan was the sole occupant inside the vehicle at the time of the impact.
Investigators from the Minnesota State Patrol took over the scene to piece together what went wrong during those early morning hours. Initial report details noted that the rural railroad crossing lacks standard automatic crossing arms, a common design for minor rural roads in the area. Authorities also noted in official crash logs that Donovan was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred.
Weather conditions at the time were clear, and the pavement across the tracks was dry. Traffic along Highway 210 was momentarily slowed down as emergency crews secured the perimeter and cleared the wreckage. Law enforcement officers continued to document evidence at the location throughout the morning hours.
Family, friends, and local residents are left grieving the sudden loss of a community member. Local officials have not released any further details regarding what might have distracted the driver or caused the vehicle to stall on the tracks. The Minnesota State Patrol continues its active investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
