A Monday night crash on N.C. Highway 8 in Davidson County killed two people and left an 8-year-old girl seriously injured. The collision happened shortly after 8 p.m. north of High Meadows Drive, where a Lincoln Town Car crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a red Honda Civic.
Austin Ray Bowden, 29, of Linwood, was driving the Honda when the crash happened. The impact was severe enough to eject him from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lincoln was driven by Kelly Cross Young, 43. She suffered fatal injuries in the crash and died in the back of an EMS unit while emergency crews were responding to the wreck.
Young’s 8-year-old daughter was riding in the front passenger seat of the Lincoln. She survived the crash but suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators said neither driver nor the child was wearing a seatbelt. Troopers also said alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor for Young.
The crash left both vehicles badly damaged and brought emergency crews to the stretch of Highway 8 shortly after the collision. Investigators are still working to determine the full circumstances that led the Lincoln to cross the center line.
The investigation remains ongoing. Troopers have not indicated that additional details about the crash are available at this time. The deaths of Bowden and Young, along with the serious injuries suffered by Young’s young daughter, remain at the center of the investigation.
