Karrar F. Alogaili, 19, was killed Saturday after the electric motorcycle he was riding crashed into a car at a busy Franklin Township intersection. The crash happened around 1:28 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Route 27 and South Middlebush Road, leaving the young Franklin Township man with serious injuries.
Police said Alogaili was traveling south on Route 27 when his electric motorcycle collided with a vehicle that was turning left from northbound Route 27 onto South Middlebush Road. The impact left him badly hurt, and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene.
Medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital treated the injured rider and took him to a local hospital. Despite the emergency response, Alogaili was later pronounced dead.
The crash initially drew attention because police described the two-wheeled vehicle as an e-bike. That description was later changed after investigators with the Franklin Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau examined the vehicle more closely.
Police determined that Alogaili had actually been riding an electric motorcycle. Investigators said the vehicle did not meet New Jersey’s legal definition of a low-speed electric bicycle because it was not pedal-assisted.
The distinction matters because the vehicle was not classified as an e-bike under the state law cited by police. Still, the basic facts of the crash remain the same: Alogaili was heading south on Route 27 when he collided with a car making a left turn onto South Middlebush Road.
The investigation is still underway, and police have not announced that anyone has been charged in connection with the crash. Authorities are continuing to work to establish exactly what happened in the moments before the collision.
For Alogaili’s family and friends, the investigation comes after a devastating loss. He was only 19, and his life ended in a crash that unfolded in a matter of seconds on a Franklin Township roadway.
