Weston Waxler was riding his motorcycle down Interstate 35 late Wednesday night when everything went wrong in a matter of seconds. The 22-year-old was heading south through New Braunfels, Texas, unaware that his trip would end in a fatal pileup near the Schmidt Avenue overpass.

It was right around 10:30 p.m. when first responders started getting frantic emergency calls about a severe wreck on the highway. Calls came in reporting a motorcyclist down on the pavement in the southbound lanes.

Police officers and emergency crews rushed to the scene just south of the overpass. When they arrived, they found a chaotic mess of stopped cars, scattered vehicle debris, and a shutdown highway.

According to preliminary reports from local authorities, Weston was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash. However, the force of the initial impact threw him directly off his bike and into active lanes of traffic.

Before oncoming drivers could react or stop, multiple vehicles hit the young rider as he lay on the roadway. Responding paramedics worked quickly to evaluate him, but his injuries were far too severe.

Medical personnel pronounced Weston dead right there on the interstate. The news quickly hit his family and local community hard, leaving relatives and friends grieving the loss of a young man with his whole life ahead of him.

Crews shut down all southbound lanes of I-35 for roughly five and a half hours to process the crash site and clear wreckage. Crash investigators spent most of the night gathering physical evidence and interviewing drivers to determine exactly what triggered the fatal wreck.
