Damira Hammonds died Monday night after her car went off the road and hit a tree on Monetta Street. The Honda Civic she was driving caught fire on impact in the 400 block. Emergency workers got to the scene shortly after the crash happened, but they could not save her.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office pronounced Hammonds dead at 9:43 p.m. Her car was heading northbound when it suddenly swerved off the right side of the pavement. The impact with the tree was hard enough to spark a fire that quickly engulfed the entire vehicle.

Because the fire caused severe thermal injuries, officials could not identify the driver right away. Coroner officials had to wait for positive identification before confirming that Hammonds was behind the wheel. The sudden loss hit her family and friends extremely hard as they grappled with the news.
Hammonds lived right in Aiken, making her loss feel personal for many people in the local community. Friends remember her as a bright presence whose life was cut far too short on a quiet neighborhood road. Local residents reported seeing emergency lights flooding the block as first responders worked late into the night.
An autopsy is scheduled to take place in Newberry as part of the formal investigation. Officials hope the examination will provide clearer answers about what happened inside the vehicle right before it left the road. Medical examiners will look closely at all physical factors to assist local traffic investigators.
A passenger was also inside the Honda Civic when the car hit the tree. That passenger managed to survive the wreck and fire, though emergency crews had to transport them to a nearby hospital right away for medical treatment. Authorities have not yet released the passenger’s current condition or identity.
Law enforcement officers are still working to figure out why the vehicle went off the roadway in the first place. Road conditions, mechanical issues, and speed remain under review as the investigation continues. For now, those close to Hammonds are holding onto her memory while waiting for official answers.
