Torren O’Grady threw his leg over his Hyper Shocker bicycle on a warm Wednesday morning, heading out for a short ride to class. It was only the fifth day of his sixth-grade year at North Stonington Elementary School. By 8:30 a.m., his morning commute ended in a sudden crash at the corner of Old Colony Road and Pinecrest Road.
Torren was eleven years old and loved being active outdoors. He played lacrosse with local youth teams and ran around his neighborhood with friends whenever he got the chance. In a small town like North Stonington, sixth graders hold a special spot as the oldest kids on the elementary campus, setting the pace for the younger students.

That morning, a 2023 Blue Bird school bus operated by a local contractor was traveling eastbound along Old Colony Road. As the bus turned left near Pinecrest Road, Torren was riding his bicycle along the same stretch. Emergency crews rushed to the intersection following calls at 8:27 a.m., but the boy died from his injuries right at the scene.
Police officers and state troopers quickly closed down the road, setting up tape near the trees bordering Kingwood Drive and Meadow Park. A bicycle lay in the middle of the asphalt as investigators mapped out the intersection and interviewed the 76-year-old bus driver, who stayed on site and worked directly with law enforcement.
Other students on board the school bus were safely moved off the vehicle and taken to school, where administrators made the heavy decision to send kids home early. Teachers and staff spent the rest of the day setting up support rooms for families trying to process what happened.
Word spread fast through the quiet residential streets of New London County. Neighbors who knew Torren remembered him as a bright, energetic kid who threw himself completely into sports and loved being part of a team. His lacrosse teammates lost a reliable friend who brought energy to every practice and game.
By nightfall, family members and neighbors found their own quiet ways to honor his memory. Torren leaves behind classmates, coaches, and a family facing an empty place at the dinner table. State police continue to review the physical evidence from the intersection, while a small town holds onto the memory of an eleven-year-old boy who just wanted to ride his bike to school.
