Michelle Robinson was standing in a driveway on a calm Wednesday evening when gunfire erupted across the yard. The 31-year-old mother of five was outside around 7:50 p.m. in the 200 block of Dellwood Avenue in Lockport Township, Illinois. She was not involved in any dispute, but she ended up right in the middle of a gunfight between passing shooters.
A man standing near her in the same driveway was also hit when the bullets flew through the lot. Neighbors who heard the sudden pops rushed to their windows and saw both victims down on the pavement. Someone dialed 911 immediately as people ran outside to try and help before paramedics arrived.

First responders from the Will County Sheriff’s Office got to the scene quickly and found both Robinson and the man bleeding on the ground. Paramedics loaded them into ambulances and rushed them straight to Silver Cross Hospital in nearby New Lenox. Doctors worked on Robinson in the emergency room, but her injuries were too severe, and she died shortly after arriving.
The male victim survived the shooting with non-life-threatening injuries. Medical staff treated him at the hospital, and officials expect him to make a physical recovery from the gunshot wounds. Investigators later confirmed that neither he nor Robinson had anything to do with the conflict that started the shooting.
Neighbors in the Fairmount area were left shaken by the sudden violence on their residential street. Those who knew Robinson remembered her as a devoted mother whose entire life revolved around her five young kids. Family members were left trying to make sense of how a routine midweek night turned into an absolute nightmare.
Deputies sealed off the block with yellow crime scene tape for hours into the night, searching the driveway and street for spent shell casings. Investigators went door to door asking homeowners for security camera footage or ring doorbell clips that might show vehicles fleeing Dellwood Avenue right after the shots were fired.
The Will County Sheriff’s Office is treating Robinson’s death as a homicide resulting from random street crossfire. As of now, police have not publicly identified the gunmen or announced any arrests. Detectives are urging anyone who saw suspicious cars or people in the neighborhood around 8 p.m. to come forward.
For Robinson’s family, the loss leaves an unbearable gap in a home that was full of kids just hours earlier. Relatives are now pulling together to care for her five children while the community waits for answers and accountability from local law enforcement.
