Police officers in Inver Grove Heights walked into a quiet townhome on the 3200 block of 78th Street East on Sunday for a routine welfare check, only to find a scene of total heartbreak. Inside, authorities discovered 43-year-old Jamie Lee Charles and her two adult sons dead. The news quickly spread through the neighborhood, leaving friends and family struggling to understand how three lives could be taken so suddenly.
Jamie Charles spent her daily life taking care of people as a registered nurse. Those close to her remembered her as a steady, hardworking mother who poured everything she had into her home and her children. She created a warm environment for her family, working long shifts at the hospital and coming home to support her sons in everything they did.

Her 19-year-old son, Willie Samuel Shaw Jr., was just starting out his adult life after graduating from Simley High School in 2025. Willie was a familiar and popular face around the community, especially on the school basketball court. Teammates remembered him as a bright, upbeat kid who brought energy into every room he walked into and made a real impact on everyone around him.
The loss hit the local community hard. On Monday evening, friends, former classmates, and neighbors gathered together for an emotional candlelight vigil outside the home. Many attendees wore custom T-shirts printed with the words “Long live Jamie & Willie,” sharing stories, hugging each other, and trying to process the sudden void left in their lives.
The Simley High School boys basketball program posted photos and a tribute to honor Willie’s memory. Coaches and former players spoke about his strong spirit, highlighting the friendship he offered to everyone on the team. They noted that his presence would continue to live on through the many young people in the district who were lucky enough to call him a friend.
To help handle the sudden financial burden, Jamie’s niece, Polly Morgan, set up an online GoFundMe campaign on behalf of Jamie’s father and grandfather, Rodney Charles. The funds are aimed at covering funeral costs, memorial services, and transportation expenses for the family. In less than a day, hundreds of local residents and strangers donated tens of thousands of dollars to help support the grieving relatives.
For the people living in Inver Grove Heights, the tragedy leaves an overwhelming silence that will take a long time to heal. Friends and family are leaning on each other for comfort, holding onto simple memories of laughter, quiet moments at home, and the deep love Jamie and Willie shared with the world around them.
