A Tuesday afternoon in Leflore County turned tragic when a local driver lost her life in a crash on U.S. 259. Chelsea Patterson, 37, was heading south near Zafra Road when her car hit a commercial truck that was making a turn. The impact killed her on the spot, leaving people in Honobia stunned by the news.

The wreck happened around 2:30 p.m. just south of Octavia. According to state troopers, a commercial truck driven by Deonta Robertson of Fort Smith, Arkansas, had slowed down to turn off the main highway. Patterson was driving down the same road when her car collided with the larger truck.

The collision sent Patterson’s car rolling over on the pavement. State troopers reported that she was thrown from the vehicle as it overturned. Paramedics rushed to the scene, but Patterson died from her injuries right there on the road.

Two passengers were riding with Patterson at the time of the collision. Emergency crews worked quickly to treat them before loading them into ambulances. Both passengers were taken to a regional hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Robertson, the man driving the commercial truck, was not injured in the crash. State troopers interviewed him at the scene as part of their routine investigation into fatal highway accidents.

Folks around Honobia know each other well, and the sudden loss hit the small community hard. Neighbors describe Patterson as someone you would see around town every week, always ready to stop and say hello.

Investigators with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are still looking into how the crash went down. Officers are checking vehicle speeds, the layout of the road, and how fast the truck was turning to get a clear picture of the incident.

Right now, friends and neighbors are doing what they can to support Patterson’s family and check on the two passengers in the hospital. Her family will share details about funeral services once those plans are set.
