Chelsea Patterson was driving down U.S. 259 on a Tuesday afternoon like any other day. The 37-year-old Honobia resident had three passengers in her car as she headed south through LeFlore County around 2:30 p.m. Nobody expected that a routine trip on a familiar country road would end so quickly.

Troopers reported that Patterson pulled out to pass another car on the two-lane road. At that exact moment, a vehicle turned onto Zafra Road right in her path. The two cars crashed, sending Patterson’s vehicle completely out of control.

The force of the collision flipped her car upside down. As the vehicle rolled over, Patterson and one of her passengers were thrown straight out of the cabin. The car finally came to a stop along the road, leaving debris spread across the highway.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene after calls came in to 911. Paramedics checked Patterson right away, but her injuries were too severe. She was pronounced dead at the scene on U.S. 259 before she could be moved.

Two other passengers in Patterson’s car survived the crash. First responders loaded them into ambulances and took them to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. The driver of the second car walked away without any injuries.

State troopers investigating the wreck noted that not everyone in Patterson’s vehicle was wearing a seat belt at the time. Officers stayed at the site for hours taking measurements and documenting the scene to figure out the full story.

People in the small town of Honobia are grieving the loss of a neighbor and friend. For her family, dealing with such a sudden loss on a regular Tuesday afternoon is something that will take a long time to process.
