A single-car crash along Highway 102 killed two long-time local musicians last Friday near Silver Falls Road in Kaministiquia, Ontario. Ontario Provincial Police identified the victims as 67-year-old keyboard player Frank Valente and 48-year-old audio engineer Aaron Jardine. Both men were well known across the region for their work on stage and behind local soundboards.
Valente spent 17 years playing keys for The Sensational Hot Rods, a popular 1950s tribute group that regularly played halls, festivals, and community centers across Northwestern Ontario. He also ran his own local music store in Thunder Bay, selling gear and fixing instruments for area players.

Band leader Stephen Clark noted that Valente was the steady hand in the group. Clark shared online that Valente handled high-pressure moments on tour with calm resolve, often referring to gigging as working in the “hospitality business.” Bandmates described him as a big brother on the road who kept everyone grounded when equipment failed or travel schedules fell apart.
Behind the scenes, Valente was just as active. His shop served as an informal hangout for younger players looking for advice on amplifiers, keyboards, or gig etiquette. He brought that same quiet discipline to every soundcheck and rehearsal he attended over his two decades in the regional circuit.
Jardine, who died alongside Valente in the accident, built his own reputation as both a guitarist and a reliable live sound engineer. He ran mixing consoles for dozens of local acts, making sure bar bands and festival headliners sounded right out front.
Tributes and memories flooded local social media feeds over the weekend. Friends, venue owners, and fellow players posted photos from old road trips, late-night load-outs, and club dates. Many recalled Jardine’s quick willingness to run sound on short notice or jump on stage to fill a spot when a band needed an extra hand.
Investigators with the Ontario Provincial Police are still working to piece together what caused the car to leave the road near Silver Falls Road. Police haven’t released details on vehicle speed or road conditions at the time of the wreck. Officers are asking anyone who was driving on Highway 102 last Friday or who has camera footage from the area to call 1-888-310-1122.
Official funeral services for Valente and Jardine have not been announced yet. Local musicians and venue operators say informal gatherings are being planned across Thunder Bay to remember both men once families finalize their plans.
