Friday nights in Mountain Home usually quiet down as people head home for the weekend, but last Friday ended in sudden tragedy on the Sheid-Hopper Bypass. Dodge Michael Harris, a 22-year-old local resident, lost his life in a late-night rollover crash that has shocked his family and close friends across town.

Dodge was known around Mountain Home as a young man with his whole adult life stretching ahead of him. At just 22, he was a familiar face to many in the area, growing up in the heart of the Ozarks where news of a young life cut short spreads fast from neighborhood to neighborhood.

The crash happened just before 9:00 p.m. on Friday along the busy bypass corridor. Dodge was behind the wheel of his car, heading west through the evening quiet, when things went wrong in a matter of seconds near a sharp curve in the road.

According to official reports from the Arkansas State Police, Dodge’s vehicle failed to negotiate the turn as he traveled westbound. The car drifted off the main lane of traffic and ran into the center median grass, putting the vehicle on a dangerous course.

State troopers reported that as Dodge tried to bring the car back into the westbound lanes, the vehicle lost traction and overturned. The violent rollover caused Dodge to be thrown completely clear of the driver’s seat onto the roadway.

First responders rushed to the scene on the Sheid-Hopper Bypass shortly after 8:56 p.m. Despite quick efforts by emergency personnel, Dodge suffered fatal injuries from the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene by local officials.

Word of the fatal wreck spread quickly through Baxter County over the weekend, leaving friends and relatives struggling to make sense of the loss. Folks who knew Dodge recalled a young man who always brought life into the room, leaving behind memories that his family will hold onto tightly.

Arrangements for Dodge Michael Harris are currently pending at Kirby & Family Funeral and Cremation Services in Mountain Home. As the town comes together to support his grieving family, local residents are left mourning a young life taken far too soon on a familiar stretch of road.
